After Thanksgiving

So good to talk to everyone at Thanksgiving.(Sorry Sandy but you were away)
Sounds like everyone was having good food and good company. We had two Thanksgiving meals. We first had lunch with Ann Tucker at her assisted living facility. You will remember Helen talking about the elderly lady she has been taking care of for the last five or six years. It was sad to see so many people there without any family or other visitors. And to think there are probably millions of others in like circumstances. The meal was pretty awful, too. For the money those people are paying, the company should have done better.
That night we had a real Thanksgiving dinner with Henny Barlow Ely. She is a great cook and we thoroughly enjoy eating at her house! She always asks about the girls. She will be going to Robin's home for Xmas.
Helen and I will be leaving for a cruise to the Caribbean on Friday. We are taking a Princess liner out of Ft. Lauterdale. We have never been on Princess before. We will be going for ten days. Most of the ports are familiar to us so we will probably just hang out on shipboard or walk to the town centers in port. We are looking forward to getting away. Cruises are really inexpensive this year. (There were some great sales on Black Friday). You really can't beat the daily price of a vacation on a cruise if you figure the price includes all your food, entertainment and lodging. You have to be careful about the extras, however, as this is where cruise lines make their money. The side tours at port, the fancy drinks on board, and the beauty salon treatments can really end up costing more than the price of the cruise itself.
We are looking forward to seeing some of the family at Christmas. We will be spending the holiday with Sandy ,Dave , Kathy, Don and some of their children. We will see Mel, Meghann and the boys on the way home. We are hopeful of getting to See Deb , John and their family, too, if we can work out the schedule. Helen and I really treasure the chance to see family at Christmas. Helen now has no family of her own left. It is an important time for both of us.
Hope we can all keep in touch more often. Talk to all soon.

When at first you do succeed, don't try try again.

Once you walk all or even most of the Appalachian Trail (AT) you get the AT virus. This means that each year you forget age, money, health, strength and reason and begin planning your next hike on the AT. The virus is a tough one to cure!!
Dan (my hiking partner in past years on the AT) and I began to plan a hike this past winter. Needless to say, as I was just getting over a hip operation and was somewhat over puberty , I should have been a little unsure of the wisdom of backpacking. It was then that the virus kicked in. We started a search of some section of the AT that was flat. The virus had infected my memory. No part of the AT is flat. Mistake number one. Next we figured out that we could carry a light pack. Mistake number two. Next we figured that September was a good month as it was cool and did not have rain in the forecast. Mistake number three.
We planned on meeting in Damascus, a town in Virginia just over the border of Tennessee. Dan drove up from Naples Florida and I drove from Wilmington. Damascus is a famous AT trail town on the AT that hosts Trail Days every year. The whole town caters to hikers and bikers . We stayed in a hikers hostel for the night and then had an outfitter drive us to our starting place. We planned to hike several days back to Damascus and then move on to a hike in the Roan Mountain area. Remember we had planned on a trail that was fairly flat and thus fairly easy walking. From the height of the mountains around our starting place, it became visibly clear that we had misjudged the terrain. Slowly my memory of the real AT began to return and I began to get nervous.
We hiked the first day about five miles to our first Shelter (a wooden leanto to those uninitiated). I knew then that the trail was not flat and also the light packs we carried were not really light. Although my pack was only about 17 pounds (which is about a third of the weight real thru hikers carry) it felt like 50. We managed to get some food and finally to lie down. It was then I remembered how difficult it is to sleep on a wooden floor. I remembered all night!!.
The next day we started to hike again. My legs and back were in opposition to the start and had to be encouraged. After several miles and still in the midst of a losing battle of encouragement, it began to rain. And I mean a big wet rain! I was now very unhappy and not a happy camper. Neither was Dan although he is younger and had driven 900 miles to hike and was thus somewhat more motivated to endure hardship.
Well, two old legs, an old back, and a sleepless wet body finally reminded me that this was not ten years ago and that George had bitten off more than he could handle. My body called out, " Stop this shit !!"
Somehow we managed to reach ( a struggled reach at that ! ) a road and were able to catch a ride back to Damascus where I spent a day recuperating before we decided to forget the rest of this strange form of masochism and return home.
And so ends this years hike. Are we any wiser? I say "yes" for now but who knows what evil lies in the heart of the AT virus and when it may strike again!

Happy Hiking from the mad hiker.

First time blogger with big news!

Hello to all!

I hope this blog finds everyone well and enjoying the last couple weeks of summer. I took Austin to visit his new daycare for an hour today, and it hit me then I'm not quite ready to go back to school and leave him just yet. I have had a great summer with him, watching him grow and learn day to day has been absolutely amazing. He will be going to KinderCare, which is a block away from the school that I teach at. My principal had recommended KinderCare to me because her daughter attends, and she had nothing but exceptional things to say about the school. During our visit, Austin loved being around all the kids there, and already had a girlfriend holding his hand. I think when the time comes for me to drop him off, I will have a harder time than him! = )

I must admit this is my second time looking at this blog page, so I have just now read all the updated Hepbron news. I know fall is bringing great changes for a lot of people. Congrats to Matt and Karen on their engagement and wedding that will take place in October. Congrats to Mary K who is a new home owner! ( I get a lot of my information from facebook! ) = ) Congrats again to William and Kelly on tying the knot! Best of luck to you both in Arizona! I hope everyone has been able to relax and catch up with family this summer. I really do hope to get a chance to see everyone soon! I know Brian and Austin are anxious to meet the rest of the Hepbron clan!

I will close this blog with my big news. I figured it would be a good way to reach a lot of people at once! We just found out we are expecting our second baby in March! Expected due date is March 4th , which is one day before my dad's birthday. We are very excited! Brian thinks it's a girl this time, and I kind of feel like it is too! Only time will tell .... I will try and be a more dedicated blogger to keep everyone updated.

Enjoy the rest of summer! Take Care! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo (with smiley faces in the Os)

Love, Meg (Do you end blogs like they are letters?)

Austin charms Virginia!!

Helen and I just returned from a trip to Virginia to see Meghann and to meet the fam0us Austin of Wisconsin fame. He is as wonderful as his reputation! We met Meg, Austin, Mel, and Corey for lunch on Friday and then went back to Mel's for a nice visit. Austin was a perfect gentleman. He has a great disposition and never appears to or get disgruntled. He smiles through all the family chatter and seems perfectly at home with all the strangers he meets.
We met Spencer on Friday eve and went out for an Italian meal Nice to see Spencer. He is working construction while job hunting. He has big muscles from working out and wows all the girls. ( Get in touch with him if you hear of job opportunities. He and Corey are planning to be at Matt's wedding.) Meg looked fantastic as a young mother and beautified Mel ( with an updated hair style)was the perfect young looking grandma.
On Saturday morning , Helen made her compulsory field trip to the Leesburg Outlet Mall to Chico's. I fiddled around as usual. We met Meg, Mel and Austin for a light lunch at the Mall in Panaros. Again it was Austin's day to steal the attention of the restaurant patrons. We said goodbye after lunch and drove home getting here at about 10pm. We reconfirmed our plans to fly to Matt's wedding many times during the long drive home . That drive from NC gets longer and longer every year!
This summer has been a real treat for Helen and I. We have had the fun opportunity to great two beautiful new members into the Hepbron family- each one as priceless as the other. How lucky the greater Hepbron family really is to have two such wonderfully healthy and adorable younsters to join future raucus gatherings of the tribe. Looking forward to it. Thanks Dana and Meg!!

wedding preparations

. . . are under way. Invitations went out at the end of last week, finally. Karen and I are in jersey for a few days trying to organize what we can. It's been a busy few weeks for me--intense boat work then a shoot in prague then to jersey the next day and returning this sunday to the west coast just in time for work on monday morning. The farm is wicked hot and muggy, though secretly I'm really enjoying it as a welcome change from the eternal chill of the bay area.

The wedding is going to be fun, I'm getting much more excited about it as the details start to come together. we owe my mom and dad big time for hosting--I am really thankful to be having it on the farm, it perfectly fits the two of us.

Karen and I were worried about the cost of the hotel and getting to and from the farm (it's 25 minutes away and $100/night), so we drove all around checking out other prices. unfortunately we couldn't find other good hotel options, everything was still right in the 95-100 range. I know that's not a lot in the grand scheme of things but some of my friends don't have two quarters to rub together (like the two guys I bought the boat with), and are likely to camp out behind the barn and shower in the ditch if we let them. We are going to arrange some sort of a shuttle back to the hotel for the night after the wedding, and the following morning for the picnic. Karen will post everything to the wedding site when we figure it out.

off now to arrange some sort of platform (?) for us to stand on for the big day

oh, and my brother showed up this week--a surprise, rare occurrence. He's currently laying on the kitchen floor playing his new pitbull puppy, which is cute, but insane.

This is what George meant by the "cake" pictures...

Ha! She loved her cupcake SO much! Amazingly, she also learned how to use a spoon that night so she could have some icecream cake!

Eve is one year old!

What a great birthday party for little Eve!. Dana and Rob put on a great spread.Helen and I, Kathy and Don, Sandy and Dave, and Derek and Lauren represented the Hepbron tribe along with many of Rob's family and many friends of Dana and Rob. It was a fun party with plenty to eat and drink. Little Eve had a ball. She was so excited. She was perfect throughout the whole thing. I hope someone will put up some of the pictures of Eve at the party- particularly the ones of her eating the birthday cake. Priceless!
Helen and I enjoyed our time with Sandy and Dave. As usual, we all went to New Egypt to the Dirt Mall ( the New Egypt Flee Market). A visit to Sandy's is not complete with out the Dirt Mall visit with Sandy and Kathy. The farm looks great and will be a great location for the next Hepbron gathering- the wedding in October.
I had a chance to see Tom Powner again on Friday ( He is in Care One in Hamilton). He seems well enough- but is beginning to talk about wanting to get home. He has lost a lot of weight but still seems to have his wits about him. It's hell to grow old!
On Sunday we heard that Paul Haring is still alive and kicking. Some of you may remember him as principal of the high school before Scarborough. Paul is 96 years old and living in Pa. near his son. Fred Wian is going to try to get in touch with him.
Helen and I hope to see many of you soon at one of our gatherings.

virgin blogger

My very first time at blogging and I'm speechless!  Dave and I are babysitting for our granddog, Max.  He is not happy to be left by his mother and father who are vacationing in the Keys.  Andrew says its beautiful there.  Matt and Karen are spending the weekend in the mountains camping.  Matthew said the altitude is so high it gets into the 40's at night and the 70's during the day.  Dave and I are at the farm working and taking care of the dogs.  What's wrong with this picture?  Now lets  see if this gets posted.   Sandy

Butterfly Gap

What a wedding! William and Kelly married in a wash of feet and much good times!! If that doesn't ring a bell, ask those who were there. We will forever remember the day as the day they exchanged clean feet!

We had a great time. The ceremony was beautiful and the reception was taken over in true Hepbron tradition. From the rehearsal dinner at Sullivans to the final lost revelers in the backwoods of Tenn. the party lived on in true Hepbron flavor. ( Yes, Helen and I got lost leaving Butterfly Gap! We were finally rescued by a nice something who put us back on the road to somewhere where we finally found a way home, I think. ( And Helen was driving, thank God.)

For all we know, the wedding party may still be winding its way to or from Butterfly Gap!

Sue and LLoyd- we had a great time!. You were great hosts to a lot of laughing and other Hepbron nonsense. But after all, isn't that what weddings are really for? A chance to say hello to old friends and to welcome new members into the tribe. I saw Sandy taking notes, so we can expect something really spectacular when Matt's turn comes. Wonder what they will wash? OK - just daydreaming. Great to see everyone. Dad and Helen.

Who left a blog?

Some of the family has asked how they go about reading, commenting, and posting their own material on the hepbron blog. Here is some information that may help. You must remember that I am new at this too and have a great deal to learn myself. However, here is what I have found to date.
1. You get to the blog by using the address http://thehepbronblog.blogspot.com. Once there, you should put the page in your " Favorites" so you don't have to retype the address every time you want to get to the blog.
2. Now anybody can post a comment about material they read on the blog. ( Note: this is a recent change) Under material you find on the blog you will see in small letters the number of comments that have been submitted for that particular posting. Click on the word "comments" and a page comes up to enable you to add your own own comments about that posting. You can write, edit, etc. When finished, click "post comment" and your comment will appear after the last comment under that particular material that has been posted.
3. Everyone in the greater Hepbron tribe has been invited to be an "Author" on the blog. Authors can publish their own material (postings) on the blog. I have submitted all the email addresses of family members, grandchildren, etc. that Sue gave me to the blogspot as "authors". BlogSpot, in turn, has sent each of these people an invitation to join the blog as "authors". You must respond and sign up for a free Google account, if you do not already have one, in order to become an "author". Once you have signed up for the Google account, you will automatically be able to post your own material. articles, etc. on the blog in addition to commenting on other's material. This is what we are hoping everyone will want to do. As of June 29, we have only 4 families signed up as authors: : Helen & I, John & Deb, Spencer, and Sue & Lloyd. I know some others have Google accounts as they use Gmail, but so far they have not signed as authors. If I missed you, or you forgot to sign up, Email me and I will send your name in.
Hope this helps some of the older Hepbrons like me who are still trying to figure out how the electric stove works. George

This is to be a team blog

Hi- Just discovered that I need to make this a team blog to have it what I hoped it would be: a blog in which everyone can compose there own topics in addition to adding comments to other's topics. I am submitting email addresses to blogspot. They will contact you with an invitation to join the team. Its free!! Join the team and start publishing your own stories! Mr. George

Spencer at the vet

Took Spencer to the vet last week. He has had ear problems and we needed to get something to keep him from shaking his head all the time. Well- you might already guess that Spencer does not like anyone fooling with his ears. Or anything else for that matter. When we arrived I discovered that the regular woman vet was not available and we had to see a male vet. We were taken back to the small examining room and a young female vet-in-training came in to take vitals. She began by deciding to take his temperature. When she lifted his tale, Spencer knew something funny was going on. He is not the kind to appreciate someone invading his ass. I had to hold him to convince him there was only to be a brief invasion. That over, she left and the new male vet came in. Now Spencer dropped his tail and sat down. He glared at the vet as if to warn him not to even think of his ass. One invasion was enough. The vet, however, wanted to look elsewhere-in his ear. Now if there is one thing worse than putting something in Spencer's ass, it is putting something in his ear. The vet immediately sensed trouble when he said "ear"and I had to intervene and try to quiet Spencer. He decided then it might be better to try a muzzle first. Spencer does not like muzzles at all. The vet called in a nice young male assistant to help with the muzzle. This guy apparently saw some pitbull in Spencer and looked very nervous . Spencer sensed dog power. The vet apparently gleaned the need for reinforcements and decided that it would be better if they took Spencer in the back where they could do God only knows what to complete the exam. Spencer disappeared with the two men and the little girl and I went to the waiting room to wait. I was there for about two minutes when I heard a crash . A moment later Spencer came racing into the waiting room with the vet and his assistant running wide eyed behind him. Spencer almost leaped into the arms of a frightened lady sitting with her cat two chairs away from me as he rounded the corner for the door outside. I was able to grab him just before he made his exit. If he had made that door, he would be in South Carolina now. The vet looked startled, frightened, and embarrased- all at once. I almost felt sorry for him. Spencer just smiled at them both.. The girls behind the counter in the waithing room were in hysterics. The poor woman with the cat looked to be in a state of shock . I think her cat may have lost on of its lives during the excitement.
Well, we then all recouped our composure. I took Spencer back to the examining room and spoke kindly to him about behaving at the vets. With a couple of treats (bribes) we were able with my help to finish an exam of sorts and get some medicine in Spencer's ear . Now Spencer still lowers his tail when a girl is around, but -by God- he is not shaking his head .

thehepbronblog.blogspot.com

The title thehepbronblog.blogspot.com is the address for this blog- I think. I have tattoed this title on my thigh so I wont forget it.
Heard from Linda Powner last night. Tom is not good. He has dementia and Linda had to place him in Care 1 ( where Ev was in Hamilton) as he was leaving the house in the middle of the night, etc. He still knows Linda but has bad days where he doesn't know where or who he is. Poor Linda has had her hands full over these last few years. Tom has had every bad illness and operation possible. I am planning to go up in the next week or so to see Tom. Linda says this would be helpful. Torey's wife is not well and has had a recent back operation so he can not spend alot of time in Jersey. Scott is in denial and has not been to see Tom in months. I'm not sure what the story is on the daughter. (can't remember her name). Will keep you informed. George

Spencer and William graduate

A special congratulation goes out to Spencer B and William T. They graduated from college!! Wow!! Four parents are proud as punch!! ( How the hell proud is that?) We all know how proud Merrilee and Brad should really feel. They did it in spite of odds !! It was tough going for a while but Spencer came through. Nice job to both boys and to both moms and both dads.

Soon we will get together for the Tantum party. Can't wait. Susan has promised a speech at the rehearsal dinner!

A beginning

I never thought I would think of starting a "blog". I always thought a "blog" was a suppository- and you don't normally send those things to friends. However, the other night I was attending a church meeting of older men and one started raving about the advantages of having a family blog to enable family to keep in touch.
Sounded to me like it had merit. So here it is!!
What do you think? Good or shitty? The only guidelines I can think of for this blog at this moment are no politics, no religion, and no frontal nudity in personal photos.
